'The View from Here' at artsdepot

May 25, 2015

The show presented the artist's site-responsive works from her ongoing London series, including Muswell Hill, Kilburn, Tottenham, and Trinity Buoy Wharf in Docklands. On the gallery floor was a specially created large scale map of the area around the gallery. Made from recycled paper collected from the venue and local schools and residents, it included individually cut elements showing architectural features sited approximately where the artist found them on the streets of North Finchley. Throughout the duration of the exhibition visitors were invited to put themselves 'on the map" and customise pre-cut recycled paper people, trees and vehicles to populate the map.

This exhibition was funded by the Esme Fairbairn Foundation .

Mapping Muswell - An N10 Paper Project

October 18, 2012

Anya went on to produce a second mapping project based on the area defined by the N10 postal district. This work is even larger at 7 metres wide and involved a more in depth approach to involving the local community. Anya achieved this by conducting a series of residencies whilst the work was in progress and liaising with various community groups.

The Facebook page documents the progress of the project from the very beginning - please see http://www.facebook.com/MappingMuswellAnN10PaperProject
For more images and information on this work please see this websites menu bar.
This installation is also now on loan to Muswell Hill Library and may be viewed during normal Library opening hours.

'Maps have traditionally been projected as a 'view from nowhere' produced objectively as a tool for way finding. The increased accessibility to information and technology in the last twenty years has opened up the process of map-making to become a more embodied practice in which counter cartographies are able to challenge the status quo. In the hands of artists, mapping becomes a practice with which to personally explore the different ways we live our lives, and readdress established power relationships, giving agency to people and places previously left off of the map.'
